What Synthesia Does
Synthesia creates professional talking-head videos using AI avatars. You type a script, choose an avatar (or create one from your own likeness), select a language, and Synthesia generates a video of a realistic AI person delivering your script. No camera, no studio, no editing skills required. The platform is primarily used for corporate training, product demos, and multilingual marketing content.
What We Tested
We used Synthesia to create a company onboarding video, a product demo, a multilingual marketing message (English, French, Spanish), and an internal announcement. We compared results against HeyGen and traditional video production.
What Works Well
- Avatar quality: The AI avatars look professional and realistic. Lip sync is accurate, facial expressions are natural, and gestures add a human touch. For corporate and training content, the quality is production-ready. Viewers may notice it is AI-generated on close inspection, but for most business contexts, the quality is more than sufficient.
- Ease of use: Type script, choose avatar, click generate. The workflow is remarkably simple. Someone with zero video production experience can create a professional-looking training video in 30 minutes. The template library helps with common formats.
- Multilingual: Generate the same video in 140+ languages. The avatar speaks each language with appropriate lip movements and pronunciation. For companies creating global training content, this feature alone can save tens of thousands of dollars in translation and re-recording costs.
- Custom avatars: Create an AI avatar from your own likeness with a short video recording. The result looks like you delivering the script. Useful for executives or trainers who want to scale their presence without recording every video individually.
- Screen recording integration: Combine avatar presentations with screen recordings and slides. This makes it practical for software tutorials, product walkthroughs, and demo videos.
What Falls Short
- Price: Synthesia is expensive. The Starter plan at $29/month gives you only 10 minutes of video. The Creator plan at $89/month gives 30 minutes. For teams, the Enterprise plan starts at $1,000+/month. Compared to HeyGen at $29/month for more generous limits, Synthesia is the premium option.
- Uncanny valley: While the avatars are good, they are not perfect. Extended eye contact, slightly unnatural head movements, and occasional lip sync errors can create an uncanny valley effect. Short videos (under 3 minutes) are more convincing than longer ones.
- Limited to talking heads: Synthesia creates presenter-style videos only. It cannot generate b-roll, cinematic footage, or creative video content. For that, you need Runway or Sora.
- Script-dependent: The output quality depends entirely on the script. A poorly written script produces a stilted video regardless of avatar quality. Synthesia does not help you write better scripts — pair it with ChatGPT or Claude for scriptwriting.
- Customization limits: Background, clothing, and gestures have limited customization options. The videos can start to look similar if you produce many with the same avatar.
Synthesia vs HeyGen
Synthesia is the enterprise choice — more polished platform, better compliance features, SOC 2 certification, and enterprise-grade security. Better for large companies with strict compliance requirements.
HeyGen is the creator choice — more affordable, more avatar variety, better voice cloning, and a more generous free tier. Better for smaller teams, marketers, and individual creators.
Pricing
Starter at $29/month (10 minutes). Creator at $89/month (30 minutes). Enterprise at custom pricing (unlimited). HeyGen comparison: Creator at $29/month with more generous limits. Synthesia's per-minute cost is higher, but the enterprise features and compliance certifications justify the premium for large organizations.
The Verdict
Synthesia earns a B+ because the avatar quality and ease of use make it a genuinely practical tool for corporate video production. Creating a professional training video in 30 minutes without any production skills is remarkable. The grade is held back from A by the high pricing, limited customization, and the uncanny valley effect in longer videos. For enterprise training and multilingual content at scale, Synthesia saves significant time and money. For individual creators and smaller teams, HeyGen offers better value.
