How We Tested

We gave each tool the same video tasks: generate a 10-second product showcase clip, create a talking head video from a script, edit an existing video with AI assistance, and generate b-roll footage from text descriptions. We tested quality, speed, ease of use, and pricing.

1. Runway — Grade: A

Average Score: 8.2/10

Runway Gen-3 remains the most capable AI video generation tool available. The video quality is the best in the industry — motion is smooth, lighting is coherent, and the results look genuinely cinematic. Text-to-video, image-to-video, and video-to-video modes all work well. The main drawback is pricing — serious use requires the Pro plan at $28/month, and even then, generation credits run out quickly with heavy use. Runway also offers powerful AI editing features: remove backgrounds from video, inpainting, motion tracking, and color grading.

Price: Free tier (limited). Standard at $12/month. Pro at $28/month. Best for: Content creators, filmmakers, and marketers who need the highest quality AI video.

2. HeyGen — Grade: A

Average Score: 8.0/10

HeyGen specializes in AI avatar videos — talking head videos where a realistic AI-generated person delivers your script. The avatar quality is remarkably convincing, with natural lip sync, facial expressions, and gestures. For businesses that need professional presenter-style videos without hiring talent or setting up a studio, HeyGen is the best option. The voice cloning feature lets you create videos in 40+ languages with your own voice. The limitation is narrow scope — it only does talking head videos, not general video generation.

Price: Free tier (1 minute). Creator at $29/month. Business at $89/month. Best for: Corporate training videos, marketing explainers, multilingual content, sales outreach videos.

3. Sora — Grade: B+

Average Score: 7.5/10

OpenAI's Sora generates impressive video from text prompts, with strong understanding of physics, motion, and scene composition. The quality can match or exceed Runway on its best outputs. However, availability is still limited, generation times are slow, and the results are inconsistent — some prompts produce stunning results while others look off. As Sora matures, it could challenge Runway for the top spot, but in its current state, the inconsistency holds it back.

Price: Included with ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) with limited credits. Pro at $200/month for higher limits. Best for: Creative exploration, concept videos, users already paying for ChatGPT Plus.

4. Descript — Grade: B+

Average Score: 7.3/10

Descript takes a completely different approach — it is a video and podcast editor that uses AI to make editing as easy as editing a text document. Edit your video by editing the transcript. Remove filler words with one click. Clone your voice to fix mistakes without re-recording. Generate captions automatically. It does not generate video from scratch, but it makes editing existing video dramatically faster. For YouTubers, podcasters, and anyone who edits their own footage, Descript is a game-changer.

Price: Free tier available. Hobbyist at $8/month. Pro at $24/month. Best for: YouTubers, podcasters, anyone who edits their own video or audio content.

5. CapCut — Grade: B

Average Score: 6.8/10

CapCut (by ByteDance/TikTok) is a free video editor with increasingly powerful AI features: auto-captions, background removal, AI-powered effects, text-to-speech, and smart editing tools. The quality of individual features is behind paid competitors, but the price — free for most features — makes it the go-to choice for social media creators on a budget. The desktop app is surprisingly capable for a free tool. The mobile app is particularly polished for creating TikTok and Instagram Reels content.

Price: Free for most features. Pro at $8/month for premium effects and storage. Best for: Social media creators, TikTok/Instagram content, budget-conscious video creators.

The Bottom Line

The AI video space is evolving faster than any other AI category. Runway leads on generation quality. HeyGen owns the avatar/talking head niche. Sora has the highest ceiling but is not consistent yet. Descript is the best AI editing tool. CapCut is the best free option. For most content creators, the practical choice is Descript for editing your own footage plus Runway for generating supplemental clips.
